Chaya Ray-Greig

“My painting are a celebration of colour, figures, form, animals, flowers and faces.”

I start most of my paintings with an eye (the right eye) and the rest takes shape from there.

I prefer not to plan my paintings, instead I paint from pure emotion. Painting is therapy for me.

I like to distort reality, elongate limbs, exadurate eyes. I work primarily in oil on canvas. Sometimes I use acrylic or make small sculptures wirh clay, but I find oils to be most effective in capturing depth and emotion. With oils I can use layering, scumbling, blending colours and creating textures.

I studied a bachelor's degree  at 'Adelaide central school of art' where I learned many techniques and listened to many interesting lectures.  art school was quite restrictive, to  paint within guidelines, fit criteria, paint realistically from a photo, mask ones own unique style to look more mainstream. I have tried to unearn a lot as I now know nothing feels better than being authentic, as an artist and as a person.
